Book beginnings on Friday!

Book Beginnings on Friday is a meme hosted by Becky at Page Turners. Anyone can participate; just share the opening sentence of your current read, making sure that you include the title and author so others know what you're reading. If you like, share with everyone why you do, or do not, like the sentence.

Cutting For Stone by Abraham Verghese

This book has been on my 'must read' list for ages and I've finally got to it and halfway through at present. It's wonderful reading and the opening line is...

"After eight months spent in the obscurity of our mother's womb,my brother, Shiva, and I came into the world in the late afternoon of the twentieth of September in the year of grace 1954."

I like it - it might not be the most exciting of lines but it provides a clear time period and introduces the two central characters. One immediately feels that the story is going to be about the lives of these twins.

  3. That's by far the best opening line I've read for awhile. The writing seems wonderful and if the story begins in the womb and is about siblings, already we have a clue it might be epic. I haven't heard of this but I will come back and look for your review.

Ps. I know I've said this before but I love your blog design, the colours are great
