Last week's plan worked in that I certainly didn't add any books to the posting pile but in terms of reading it was a dismal failure. I couldn't get interested in any of them, only finished one, and carted them all back today. This week I had a lovely long browse and bought home the biggest loot I've had for some time.
Poldark's Cornwall by Winston Graham........When I picked this up I was transported back to the late 1970's and the wonderful BBC TV series. I loved it and nothing was allowed to get the way of my watching the weekly episode. I know I read some of the books then but with nostalgia kicking in I thought why not........I'll read the first in the 12 book series, Ross Poldark, and who knows I may like it enough to read them all.
The Meeting Place by Mary Hocking......When Clarice Mitchell arrives at an isolated farmhouse she enters a world as mysterious as the unpredictable moorland.
A Closed Eye by Anita Brookner......Born to elegant, but frivolous, parents, Harriet grows up ignored and unguided, shrouded in an innocence that neither her marriage or friendships do anything to dispel.
People of the Book by Geraldine Brooks......' a moving novel about war, art, love and survival.' The only book by this author I haven't read .
Raven Black by Ann Cleeves.......the first in the suspense thriller series set in the Shetland Islands which I often see mentioned but so far haven't read.
Once Upon A River by Bonnie Jo Campbell ........A river odyssey through rural Michigan by a young woman in search of her vanished mother. I read the first pages at the library and liked what I read so had to bring it home.
Now.........what shall I read first?
I remember reading something about the Maud Pember Reeves book, and thinking that it sounded fascinating. I don't think our libraries had it, though - I'll have to look at inter-library loan.
ReplyDeleteI so enjoyed People of the Book, though it isn't an easy read.
I was checking the Virago authors and wondered if Maud had any connection with the NZer William Pember Reeves. Once I discovered she was his wife I knew the library would have a copy of this book. I think it will be very interesting.
DeleteI saw Once Upon a River at a used book store recently ended up putting it back on the shelf. I'll have to take a closer look next time and maybe bring it home with me - it sounds good!
ReplyDeleteI hope it will be - I liked the writing style of the first few pages.
DeleteEnjoy your loot! :D
ReplyDeleteThanks :-) I'm sure there'll be something among this lot to enjoy.
DeleteAll of these are new to me. Enjoy your loot.
ReplyDeleteThanks Linda. :-)
DeleteInteresting loot this week! I hope you get engrossed in each and every one of them!
ReplyDeleteI would like to think that might happen - at least I've got plenty of choice.
