The Shadow of Your Smile by Mary Higgins Clark

Challenge 11 - All in the Family

Challenge Description: The writing gene often runs in the family. For this challenge, you need to find two authors from the same family (either by blood or by marriage) and read a book by each of the authors and then write about both books

I've chosen the mother/daughter authors Mary Higgins Clark and Carol Higgins Clark.

*********

They'll stop at nothing to silence Olivia .........even murder!

At age eighty-three and in failing health, Olivia Morrow knows she has little time left. The last of her line, she faces a momentous choice: expose a long-held family secret, or take it with her to her grave.
Olivia has in her possession letters from her deceased cousin Catherine, a nun, now being considered for beatification by the Catholic Church. These letters reveal that at 17, Catherine gave birth to a son and gave him up for adoption and they identify the father as Alex Gannon, a world famous doctor , scientist and inventor of medical patents.
Now, two generations later, 31-year-old pediatrician, Dr.Monica Farrell, Catherine's granddaughter, stands as the rightful heir to the Gannon fortune. But in telling Monica who she really is, Olivia would have to betray Catherine's wishes and reveal the story behind Monica's ancestry.

Mary Higgins Clark has long been one of my favourite suspense writers. She published her first book in 1968 and I've been there all the way, waiting with anticipation for the next release and making my family wait for dinner because I couldn't bear not to turn another page. Her books are aimed mainly at women readers with many of the plots involving issues that could happen to anyone and always a courageous and independent young women as the main character and what amazing ability for drawing out the suspense.
This wonderful author, still writing at 82, has given me hours and hours of reading pleasure which is why I've chosen not to do a proper review of this book. I'll simply say I enjoyed it but it's not as good as her earlier ones.

  5. What dedication you've shown to her ... and she to you. I imagine it is only natural for her books to not be as good as they used to. But hats off to her for continuing to write!
