Library Loot

Library Loot is a weekly event co-hosted by Marg at The Adventures of an Intrepid Reader and Claire at The Captive Reader that encourages bloggers to share the books they’ve checked out from the library.

Last week was National Library Week here in NZ and our library was doing some fun promotional activities.
One of them is a sort of mystery parcel/lucky dip in which they wrap parcels of two new books up and readers can choose...........who could resist that temptation? Not me, although I'd only gone in to return some books before going away. My surprises were.....

Eternal on the Water by Joseph Monniger.........Set against the rugged wilderness of Maine, the exotic islands of Indonesia, the sweeping panoramas of Yellowstone National Park, and the tranquil villages of rural New England, Eternal on the Water is at once heartbreaking and uplifting - a timeless, beautifully rendered story of true love's power.

Impact by Douglas Preston............Wyman Ford is tapped for a secret expedition to Cambodia to locate the source of strangely beautiful gemstones that do not appear to be of this world. A brilliant meteor lights up the Maine coast. Two young women borrow a boat and set out for a distant island anxious to find the impact crater.

I think my lucky dip sounds quite promising..........and I also spotted these two so brought them home too. That TBR pile is growing again.

The Bones of Avalon by Phil Rickman...........It is 1560. Elizabeth Tudor has been on the throne for a year, the date for her coronation having been chosen by her astrologer, Dr John Dee, at just 32 already famous throughout Europe as a mathematician and expert in the hidden arts. But neither Elizabeth nor Dee feel entirely secure. Both have known imprisonment for political reasons.

Faithful Place by Tana French........Back in 1985, Frank Mackey was 19, growing up poor in Dublin's inner city, and he and Rosie Daly were all ready to run away to London together. But on the night when they were supposed to leave, Rosie vanished. Twenty-two years later, Rosie's suitcase shows up behind a fireplace in a derelict house on Faithful Place, and Frank is going home whether he likes it or not.

I've enjoyed previous books by both these authors although the Phil Rickman sounds very different from his usual choice of subject.

What's in your loot this week?

  2. Gee, I think you scored in that lucky dip. That is such a fun way to broaden people's reading horizons. I really enjoyed Preston's Tyrannosaur Canyon so I hope Impact is just as good. I am always impressed by the inspired titles authors come up with - love 'Eternal on the Water' - it has to be good! Enjoy :)

  7. The mystery parcels are fun - you can never be sure just what will be inside.

Joanne - thanks for the Preston recommendation. I haven't read any of his and wasn't what to expect. Always nice to have an opinion from someone else.
